Seafood Grill in Sanbon

Today Krista and I wondered down the streets of Sanbon again and came across this Seafood Grill restaurant. It had a menu with pictures on it and we liked what we saw so we thought we would give it a try!

They have a variety of broiled, roasted and fried foods among others.

Can’t forget the drink menu! They have 4 different kinds of fruit cocktail that looked really good, and they’re huge! Next time…

We decided to go with Set 2 for 19,900W ($20) for the two of us. For the amount of food you get, this is extremely cheap compared to prices at home. However, this is a relatively expensive meal in Korea.

This was the appetizer that came out first – two eggs sunny side up and a bowl of fish cake soup (we think) which takes a bit to get used to. Awww.. it looks like a face!

This came out next – it was some sort of fishy broth (not as fishy as the one above). On the skewers were a mixture of egg, tofu and vegetables which we dipped in a sesame red pepper sauce. It was great!

This was part of the main dish – it had tofu, octopus, mussels and shrimp in a different spicy sesame sauce.

his was the second part of the main dish – it was salmon and tuna on top of kind of cellophane noodle. We took the fish and noodles and wrapped it in a seaweed wrap. Check out the video below of Krista trying one for the first time!

The Pirate Bar

It was my birthday (September 20th) and a few of us teachers went downtown to what is know as the Pirate Bar (I forget the actual name, we’ll get a pic a post it at some point).

This is an entertaining bar for many reasons. First of all, the beer is cheapy cheap here as well, $2 for 500ml. When you order draught beer, it comes in an ice mug (we’ll get a picture of this next time for sure and post). There is a plastic half mug with a handle that holds a hollow mug of ice, inside is placed a plastic sleeve that is filled with beer. You can take out the sleeve of beer and throw your ice mug at anytime, but generally speaking you finish your whole beer before it melts. Pull out the sleeve and take the ice mug to the target. Keep behind the line marked on the floor and give it your best! If you hit the target, the lights spin around and stop on either a free beer or try again space.

Here is a picture of John from our school, drinking Soju – more on Soju to come! If you like your peanuts or salty snacks at the bar, you won't find them here. All you get are these bland air puffs that resemble cereal. When you think about it, it's not so bad - keeps us from eating deep fried bar food!

It’s great fun but not as easy as it looks, especially after a few beers. Check out this short video clip of Jon trying to hit the target.

Downtown Sanbon & Shopping at EMart

After eating at the Korean BBQ restaurant, we walked about 10 blocks to EMart (EMart basically bought out the Super WalMart there and took care of business). EMart is 3 stories – they have a full out grocery store, clothing, electronics and appliances and much, much more (The rest of the floors are part of the parking garage).

For those of you who love crowds, this is the place for you! We cannot believe the amount of people in this building, it’s absolutely insane. People and carts everywhere, they even have people working there to promote and sell products ALL over the store. These promoters are dressed in all kinds of costumes of the product they are selling – from Pantene Pro V to Olympus Cameras to Traditional Hanboks. All the cashiers wore white gloves and we had to pay 50W or 5 cents for each plastic bag.

There are elevators but there are also escalators that lock the wheels of your cart down so you can move from floor to floor easily (as easily as you can among a bazillion people). The last time we were there Jon nearly went insane – now that we have the necessities we’ll stick to the markets (stay tuned for pictures later on).

Downtown Sanbon (Sanbon is an area in Gunpo-City which is located in Gyeonggi-do Province) to wander around. It was a Wednesday night and the nightlife was still crazy busy!

It looks similar to Fremont Street in Vegas (except we can’t read the writing yet) – everything was lit up. Korea is a small country and land is very valuable, there are high rise buildings everywhere. In these pictures you can see multiple story buildings filled with little restaurants and shops galore. You can find hidden gems all over, but you have to look within the different floors to find them.

We love these fountains! You can find them all throughout Korea in various designs, some days we wish we could run through just to cool off. Apparently the hot season is over (Summer is disgustingly hot and humid here) but we’re both sweating on the 15-20 minute walk to school.

Downtown also has a bar we call the Pirate Bar – stayed tuned for a few pictures and even a short video clip!
